Prenatal care consultation

Do you love your provider but still have questions? Are you unsure if what you are being told is the same as what you would hear in the US? Are you facing a tough decision about induction, or cesarean delivery and want to talk it out? Do you have questions about a birth plan, or about what to expect after the baby is delivered? Do you know about the “Golden Hour” and how you can optimize your chances of successful breastfeeding? I can help you with that.

As a private practice doctor in San Francisco for many years, I worked with many patients in a collaborative practice with midwives. I helped women understand the information that they were being given about their pregnancy and guided them through some of the tough decisions in pregnancy. I believe that women deserve to feel empowered and informed about their pregnancy and birth.

I will review your medical care, your understanding of what you have been told, and compare that to the standard of care in the US. I can help you understand why your provider might be encouraging you to do more, or less testing, or to undergo an induction of labor. I can also walk you through what to expect in labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period.

We can discuss how to optimize successful breastfeeding through the “Golden Hour” and the first days of your baby’s life. I can help you feel comfortable by giving you the information and tools to make good decisions that you feel comfortable with.

Birth Planning

Do you have questions about what to expect during labor and birth? Do you have strong feelings about being un-medicated or wanting an “early” epidural? Do you want to breastfeed? Do you want to know what a typical newborn is like, and how to optimize your bonding in the first days of life? I can help you prepare for this important stage in your life.

As a bedside Ob in the US, I counseled countless women on their birth plan decisions, what to expect for the “big day”, and how to optimize breastfeeding and bonding with their newborn. I am also the mother of three children and have some first-hand experience that helps provide perspective and practical tips. Let me help you with this amazing transition! Knowledge, preparation and flexibility will be on your side.

Postpartum Support

The first weeks at home with a newborn are a magical time. Having the right skills to soothe, nourish and support yourself and your newborn will make this period easier. While hospital-provided midwives are very helpful with this transition, sometimes moms need a little more support.

I led our hospital’s breastfeeding task force in San Francisco. In that role I worked side by side with lactation consultants, midwives and pediatricians to optimize successful breastfeeding. I have extensive clinical and practical, personal experience with nursing a newborn and I will be there for you.

Living with a newborn requires around the clock attention to their needs, and also to your own. There are proven techniques to help soothe your little one, boost your milk supply, and help you get the rest you need to give your baby all the support they need. One solution does not work the same for everyone, and I will help you find the techniques that work best for you.

Sometimes moms also just need someone to talk to about how they are feeling, or what they have been advised to do. Let me help you so that you can feel confident in your parenting choices.

Beyond the postpartum period

After your baby is a few months old, new questions will probably arise. When and how do you sleep train? Are you going back to work and need to figure out pumping? Is your baby interested in transitioning to solids and you have questions? Are you ready to be intimate with your partner again but have some questions? These are topics that I have plenty of experience discussing. There is so much advice out there about the right or wrong way to tackle these questions, sometimes you need a little help finding the right solution. Let me help you find the solutions that work for your family.

Family Planning

Are you confused about all the methods that are available? Are you unsure about the safety of different methods? Do you have questions about birth spacing and optimal timing of future pregnancies? These decisions are really important and personal. If you have questions and want to talk about the evidence, and what you are looking for in birth control and pregnancy spacing, I can help.

Menopause and life transitions

Are you feeling differently and unsure if it is “normal”? Do you have questions about what to expect in the menopausal transition? Have you gone through menopause and now have questions about your wellness? Do you have questions about sexual health? Every woman is unique, and our bodies go through changes throughout our lifetimes. Sometimes a little knowledge and preparation can ease anxiety about what is or isn’t “normal” and what to expect. I can help you understand what might be happening with your body, recommend any exams or tests that you may want from your medical provider, and help you feel comfortable with what you are going through. You are not alone, and no question is too basic or awkward to ask. I am here for you if you need someone to talk to!
